Job Description for Director of New Media


Background:
Freedom to Marry is the gay and non-gay partnership working to win marriage equality nationwide.  Headed by Evan Wolfson, Freedom to Marry brings the work of individuals, organization, and allies committed to ending exclusion from marriage into a larger whole, a shared civil rights campaign that enhances new resources, urgency, and opportunity for this social justice movement.

Freedom to Marry encourages dialogue with Americans thinking through the need to end discrimination in marriage, provides support to targeted state and local efforts, and promotes fairness for all families, including same-sex couples and the children raised by gay parents. By working to secure equal access to civil marriage licenses from the government, Freedom to Marry reinforces our country's historic commitment to freedom, the pursuit of happiness, and equal justice for all.

Position Description:
Freedom to Marry is looking for a creative team leader and strategic thinker who is exceptionally driven and committed to winning the freedom to marry nationwide. The Director of New Media will be a senior manager responsible for helping to create and then manage the New Media team and full operation of the department. The primary goal of the New Media team will be to develop and manage a comprehensive online communications strategy and capability that builds a national brand and online presence that welcomes in gay and non-gay supporters, provides them with the information they need, and moves them to action.  Responsibilities include setting and meeting key goals for awareness and traffic building, fundraising, mobilizing grassroots action, and list-building; and overseeing planning and creation of email campaigns, website and blog content, social media, action steps, and other online outreach and mobilization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an online communications and organizing strategy that supports Freedom to Marry’s overall goals and complements our offline strategy
  • Deploy and oversee all aspects of the implementation of the online communications work and online organizing work of the organization
  • Build and lead a talented staff team who will implement the new media strategy
  • Collaborate with other senior staff to complement and support other departments
  • Oversee and execute the development of email arcs that will recruit new members, mobilize supporters, and drive donations
  • Oversee and execute the creation of compelling content and online features such as video messaging that support the online strategy
  • Work to ensure that relevant metrics inform our online strategy
  • Manage relations with external consultants to execute website design projects, technological development, and overall maintenance
  • Develop and manage online marketing
  • Alert organization and partners about emerging technologies or applications and the opportunities to integrate them into the movement.
  • Devise concrete, creative, and diverse action steps that serve the frontline groups and key battles, in fulfillment of the entire national strategy

Qualifications

  • Dedication to promoting civil rights and winning the freedom to marry nationwide
  • Demonstrated ability to work in diverse teams, manage staff/consultants, and also drive projects independently
  • Demonstrated ability with managing new media strategy development, content creation, website development and deployment of messaging through social networking
  • Some experience with producing or supervising the production of videos in the context of web content and/or online campaign
  • Experience working with Content Management System (CMS) and constituent management systems (CRM), and the demonstrated ability to learn new systems
  • Experience with creating and measuring success of online advocacy campaigns, such as email campaigns or online advertising
  • Background in HTML preferred
  • Strong writing, messaging, and communications skills
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced and mission driven organization.

The Director of New Media is a member of the senior management team.

Salary & Benefits: 

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.  Ideally, the new Director of New Media would be available to assume responsibilities for this full-time, New York City-based position as soon as possible.
